Values and Ethos
Thorntree is a one-form entry, popular and successful community school situated in Charlton in the London Borough of Greenwich. It is a welcoming and friendly school where staff work hard to make children’s learning both relevant and enjoyable.
The school opened in 1927 as an Infant and Nursery School. In 1995 an extension was built to accommodate the older primary children. By 1998 Thorntree School was a fully-fledged Primary School catering for children aged three to eleven.
In addition to the classrooms we have a well-stocked library and two halls. Adjacent to Maryon Wilson Park, our hilly grounds contain woodlands, a large terraced field, a pond and three playgrounds. Almost hidden in a deep valley of trees, the school’s rural setting is rare for an inner- London school and gives it a special character.
Mission Statement (Ethos)
Thorntree is a forward-thinking inclusive school with high expectations for all our children. Here we embrace diversity, creative positive energy and promote achievement.
Thorntree is a place where everyone strives to be the best that they can be.
School Drivers
Our four school drivers are Creativity, Inquisitiveness, Healthy Minds and Healthy Bodies, and Our Environment. Please see the Curriculum Section of the website (under the heading 'Teaching and Learning') to read about them in more detail.
We are a Dyslexia Friendly school
We are committed to being a Dyslexia Friendly School. The school celebrates children’s strengths and encourages an ethos where children are accepting of each others' differences.
We recognise that it is the responsibility of every teacher and LSA within the school to remove barriers to learning and make learning accessible to all. Every child has an entitlement to have their needs met through Quality First Teaching and appropriate differentiation.
Classrooms have Dyslexia Friendly resources and displays and children are encouraged to recognise their own learning styles.
