The Library

At Thorntree we have a well-stocked Library with distinct areas for book storage and borrowing, for children’s learning and for teacher administration and research.

UPDATE: Library book borrowing sessions for Years 3, 4, 5 & 6

For the next few weeks, until the school can re-open fully, we will be offering Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 the opportunity to come and change their library books once a week. Here is how it will happen:
The Year 3/4 bubble can come on Wednesdays between 1.15 – 2.15pm.
The Year 5/6 bubble can come on Thursdays between 1.15 – 2.15pm.
Book borrowing sessions will be from the lower gate on Pound Park Road.
Children & parents should line up respecting the 2 metre social distancing measures at all times.
Children will place any old books that they wish to return into a “returns box”, allocated for that day. These will be quarantined for 72 hours before being cleaned and sanitised by the librarian.
The librarian will then help each child choose their new books. Books will be handled by the librarian only. There will be a selection of age-appropriate books on trolleys at the gate to choose from. We will have fiction, non-fiction and art, cookery and craft books too. We also have some new books.
All books for loan will be safe to borrow, having been previously quarantined and cleaned.
If the weather is bad, please check with the school before setting off as we may need to alter this system slightly or move it to another day.
We look forward to seeing you when you pop by to collect new books.

We have well over 4,000 books in our Library, both fiction and non-fiction, so the children have plenty to choose from! The Library is fully computerised and the children are taught to use the Library as they would a public library. Between September 2001-July 2020 the children have borrowed over 48,800 books.

In Year 1, children borrow one book per fortnight. While they are learning how to use the Library and take responsibility for the books that they borrow, they keep their chosen books in a special box in their classroom. In subsequent years, children take their books home. In Year 2, the children can borrow one book per fortnight. In Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 the children can borrow two books per fortnight.

Facts:  most borrowed categories – insects & animals and cookery; most popular authors – R L Stine (Goosebumps), Francesca Simon (Horrid Henry) and Jacqueline Wilson.

We welcome donations of good quality children's books, as long as they are in good condition.
